Review: Spice Coolpad

Chinese phones have flooded the Indian market as they have been creating buzz sporting low prices. Most of them come pre-loaded with a number of apps too. These features attract most of the youngsters. In order to beat competition and stay afloat, Spice has launched its new Coolpad device in collaboration with Chinese vendor Coolpad.

But then this is not your regular Chinese phone by any count. It in fact offers excellent features for a price of Rs 9,990. The dual SIM phone boasts a big 5-inch display screen with 540×960 pixel resolution.

Wrapped in a plastic body painted in blue metallic hues, the rig weighs 161 grams and is 9.9 mm thin. However, it would be best to use a pouch as the device is a tad slippery and there are chances of scratches.

The Coolpad sports a 5MP rear camera and 0.3 MP front snapper. The phone also features speaker and microphone to record voice, but both come with low quality capabilities when compared to that used in other smartphones.

The Spice Coolpad runs Android Jelly Bean 4.1 OS and is fueled by a 1.2 GHz quad core Mediatek processor. It packs 1 GB of RAM which helps in faster downloads. Shuffling between apps is easier and the Coolpad supports 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The internal storage is 4GB, which can be expanded to 32GB via microSD.

The device is pre-loaded with number of apps including WhatsApp and Twitter. But the battery, 2000mAh, is a bit disappointing as it doesn’t have the juice to last even a full day on a single charge. That means, if you are buying this device, you may have to carry chargers along when you venture out even for a day.

Verdict: Pretty good specs and price, but battery disappoints
