Data-Only Plans Could be the Future

The time is not far off when we will carry around data-only plan smartphones, completely neglecting the conventional voice-text options offered these days.

When such a speculative thought comes from AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, it calls for some serious thought.

Randall has been quoted as saying that will be surprised if he doesn’t see any people walking with data-only plans in the next 2 Years. Gradual swap to such plans are inevitable for the future of telecom industry, he said.

Nonetheless, he didn’t give away a direct clue about AT&T’s plans on data-only endeavor in the near future.

The idea is even significant in the present times, where VoIP services like Skype and Viber are hugely popular. Also, alternative messaging platforms like iMessage, BlackBerry Messenger, and WhatsApp also pose a serious threat to the conventional messaging platform.

Recently, we also have heard that carriers like AT&T and Verizon are also planning to bring over a voiceover LTE service to the market.

Considering these facts, we could expect the data-only service to materialize soon. However, it will be interesting to know which carrier will foray into the market first.

What do you think of the AT&T CEO’s prophecy? Will data-only plans be a viable source of income to the telecom industry?
